Safari at Omega Park, a Must-See in Quebec

Omega Park is a wildlife park in Montebello, Quebec, between Montreal and Ottawa, where you drive a 15 km trail while deer, elk and bison come right up to your car window for carrots. Open year-round, it gathers many of Canada’s wild animals in large natural spaces, and it makes a great family day out. Here is what to expect on the car tour and on the walking areas.

What Is Omega Park?

Omega Park (Parc Omega) is a wildlife sanctuary where hundreds of animals move freely in wide open spaces.

Along the way, you can spot elk, caribou, white-tailed deer, roe deer, bison, wild boar and wild geese.

You will also see wolves (black, grey and arctic), arctic foxes, mountain goats, moose, coyotes and bears (cinnamon and black). These animals are kept behind fences, for your safety and your car’s.

The Car Trail: Feeding Deer from Your Window

What makes Omega Park special is that you visit it by car. You simply drive the 15 km of marked roads from the comfort of your seat.

To get closer to the animals, you can tempt the deer with carrots. Slow down near them and they will walk up to you. Open your window and they will poke their snouts inside to satisfy their huge appetite for carrots.

Warning: don’t roll your window all the way down, or you’ll end up covered in drool!

Tip: bring several kilos (or pounds) of carrots. They disappear surprisingly fast: we had used up half of ours in the first five minutes after entering the park.

Forgot your carrots at home? No problem, you can buy some at the park.

The car trail is one-way and takes about an hour and a half. You can drive it as many times as you like during the day.

But Omega Park isn’t only seen from the car: you can also park to stretch your legs and make the fun last longer.

Land of the Pioneers

Halfway along the trail, park your car and explore the Land of the Pioneers. This area offers enough activities to keep kids and adults busy for a good part of the day.

You visit it on foot, with activities, playgrounds and picnic tables.

Watch the grey wolves from the footbridge built for this purpose, and ask the guide-interpreter your questions about them.

The Old Farm

The walking trails lead to the old farm, with white-tailed deer for company. Children will likely love the chickens, pigs, ponies, rabbits and donkeys.

The park usually presents wolf and bird of prey shows, but they were suspended during our 2020 visit because of Covid-19.

First Nations Trail

Here again, you can step out of the car to learn about the history of Quebec’s 11 First Nations, represented by a series of totem poles carved by an Indigenous sculptor. The trail loops around a lake full of large trout and turtles, and it is beautiful.

We have been coming back to Omega Park as a family for several years. Every year, the park has more to offer, including accommodations with a panoramic view of a pack of grey wolves. And the animals have always looked healthy and well cared for.

Overall, the park shows every sign of good management, and we recommend it without hesitation!
